We woke up around 5:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep. Though that was definitely not the first of things that we were concerned with. We had to leave Durmitor and we hadn’t booked any hotels along the coast. So while we waited for breakfast to be served at 7:30 we got our things packed so we could get out of dodge at a moments notice. At breakfast we talked to the lady at the front desk and she gave us some advice on where to stay and told us that she would call the travel agency to get the ball rolling, the only thing we had to do was to make sure we caught the 11:25 bus to Podgorica. The ride down the mountain was just as fun as the ride up. A road filled with potholes, on coming traffic on a one lane road, and a bus that is almost flying down the mountain makes for an excited ride.

When we got to Podgorica we walked over to Lucky Tours which hooked us up with our hotel in Zabljak. The lady looked frazzled, apparently she had worked all day to get us a place to stay in Kotor and Dubrovnik with things not quite going to plan. She was unable to find us a room in Kotor so she had to book us a place in Budva and Dubrovnik she could find anything less than an apartment in the center of town. Of course MaryAnn and I were cool with both, the only thing is that I hadn’t looked up Budva when I researched Montenegro so I didn’t know what to expect when we got there. Well let me tell you coming in to Budva was jaw dropping. The bus is going though mountain valley after mountain valley that is covered in chaparral and all of a sudden we make a turn and we are on top of a mountain that drops about 1000 feet right in to the ocean with a city below with orange terra cotta roofs everywhere. To quote MaryAnn, “This what I came to Europe to see.” The 10 minute ride down was amazing as we went switch back down giving everyone a great view. When we finally got to the Budva bus station we had a car waiting for us to take us to the hotel. So with in 5 minutes of being in Budva we were on the patio for our room enjoying oceans view, though be it were pretty far back it was still an ocean view. So we throw down everything and make a B-line for the water and in the course of doing so we find Stari Grad, which is apparently Budva’s old walled city that is now filled with shops and restaurants in small alleyways with the Adriatic just on the other side. So after exploring for hour or two we finally have our first ‘dinner’ out and we went to town. Afterward walking down the now lit alleyways it give you the strong sense that you are Pirates of the Caribbean ride walking. After escaping into the wilderness in Durmitor we have definitely found the Europe we were looking for starting with Budva.

So today we move up the coast. We’ll have lunch in Kotor and end the evening at our apartment in Dubrovnik! You got to love this place.

Trip so far! Podgorica/Durmitor

Okay so now that I got the last of the catchup posts taken care of this is the first update to date post and possibly the last until I find internet again. So after we got into Podgorica late (thank you Jat Airlines!) we slept until about 6 am! Damn you jetlag. Though it was nice having the whole day ahead of us. While MaryAnn was getting ready I decided to walk around a bit and found a cool little trail along a creek that I took some col pictures along. After breakfast MaryAnn and I went looking for a travel agency to get a hotel in Zabljak, which I couldn't pronounce to save my life, though no luck. We did find the Millennium Bridge which is the only thing worthy of putting on a post card for Podgorica. We set off from our hotel in search of the bus station and in the process of getting lost we found a travel agency that got us two nights in Zabljak and also were really nice even giving us Fanta while everything printed out. The bus ride to Zabljak was about 4-5 hours with a bus change but the second bus is where the fun began. Beautiful views and a bus driver determined to get us there no matter if there wasn't a road or if there was on coming traffic on a one lane road.
After getting to our Hotel we woke up today ready for a hike. MaryAnn and I went on about 10 mile hike through Montenegro's only national park, Durmitor. Durmitor is also a UNESCO site means that it is even more unspoiled. It was so quiet and peaceful that you almost forget that you are on the other side of the world from anybody else we know. On the way back into town it started pouring on use so we were drenched by the time we got back to the Hotel. So tomorrow it is back down the mountain with a final destination of Kotor lined up for tomorrow. I try to keep you all posted but have patience since I never know when I find internet.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thekingstonjournal.blogspot.com/2008/06/trip-so-far-podgoricadurmitor.html' title='Trip so far! So here we wait be told we'll still be able to make it to London.

9 am

D-Day -4 Hours

Okay so I've been packing for the last week it seems and now I'm just hours away from blasting out of San Diego for Montenegro (via Boston, London, and Belgrade). Now you might go, "Nathan, I still talk to people face-to-face. What makes you old fashioned over the likes of me?" Well I'll explain.

With the advent of (insert catchy hip term here) generation, or otherwise kids that have no idea what the world was like before the internet...or at least youtube, there has seemed to be a steady decline of actually talking to friends in person. Sure you talk to friends all the time though I'm betting close to ninety percent of the time your not actually within miles of them and communicating is being achieved by modern technology. Things like text-messaging, instant messaging, e-mail, forums, social networking sites (i.e. Facebook) have distanted ourselves from actually seeing people we call 'friends'.

Though I degress from the title of this post. The downside of blogging in my eyes is that if I put a witty interesting story on my blog, The Kingston Journal, I feel like telling people about it...in person. I know this sort of defeats the purpose of the blog since its suppose to be like some sort of online journal thingy or whatever, but I don't find myself overly funny so the only thing that I have going for myself in everyday conversation is my somewhat witty stories that I post on my blog. The catch-22 is when I get into conversation with a friend about something interesting like...say the harassment of photographers, I'm not even done with my opening monologue when they say that they already read it on my blog. What are you suppose to say after that?! Well did you like what I wrote? Did I misspell anything this time? In my opinion it kind of kills the conversation. Which kills social interaction. Which drives people to just blog more and avoid seeing people in real life.

So if I'm around and start to rant about blogs, just say that you already read what I had to say and I'll just shut up and go back to checking my Facebook.

Art Walk Rap-up

So over the weekend I worked the Little Italy Art Walk as a volunteer for Broadway San Diego. Well to better classify it was I volunteer but force rather than choice. My Theatre 345 class requires 15 hours of internship hours with Broadway San Diego during the semester, which I could care less about since I already have an internship with Qualcomm and I don't expect to go into theatre marketing anytime soon...but it was fun to hang out in Little Italy for both days and Alex, the guy from BroadwaySD, was really chill and let us see the art walk instead of keeping us at the both the whole time. With the heat wave that hit San Diego it made day 2 a little unbearable. Though I think the booths across the street from us would have gladly taken the heat compared to what happened to them. Around 3 o'clock on Sunday a water main broke and flooded a good portion of the art walk including the other side of the street from our booth. We were fine but some of the artist on other streets had flood sales since you had to wade through 4-6 inches of water to get to their booths. So take away the heat and the sun and you had nothing but good times with Kashi, Zone Perfect, and Geico giving out free stuff. Heck I even bought some artwork!

Tired of High Gas Prices?

Get a Po-Go Stick!

In my random searches of the internet I found an interesting Disney short about alternatives to the car during the rubber rationing of WWII and who would have thought that the Po-Go stick was the true successor to the car. I do understand the concern, but it seems that it is going overboard and current British propaganda is helping to spread this fear. In this day and age cameras are practically everywhere from cellphones to slim point-n-shoots though the article focuses on people with professional looking cameras like a SLR. Now if I'm a terrorist do you think I want to bring attention to myself by wiping out a toaster sized camera? No I use my 3.2 megapixel cellphone to get the shots I need.

Also with current CCTV in Britain it just kind of seems like a mute point to get citizens worked up about these sorts of things. Maybe I'm treating this too lightly and maybe its a legitimate concern since we are in a war on ambiguous terror. Why not just add terror of Amateur Photographers to the list.

New Propaganda Poster

Old Propaganda Poster

Website Overhaul

So when I updated the website near the end of March I thought I had everything taken care of before I headed off this summer. Well since they cleared my computer's account preferences I some how lost the files for the website that I used for the website. Now I didn't lose the pictures or the albums but the actual page files like pictures.html and such. Now I'm sure if I scour my computer for the documents I'll find them and everything will be fine, though I got a new idea for the site. I won't be able to show you any of it just yet (because it will over-write the 'new' site and all the witty picture captions I wrote last summer), but I'm sure it won't be too long before I'm itching to bring it live. It'll be the best of web 1.0, since I have no clue how to use flash. I'm sure you are all shaking with anticipation, 'cause I know I am.

Urinetown (The Musical)

So for those who know me I'm sure I've already told you that I'm involved this semester in marketing the plays/musicals at San Diego State. The musical that I'm the most involved with is Urinetown, which is apparently a well known Broadway show that everyone and their brother has done already in San Diego. Since our main audience is SDSU students I pitched the idea of doing a film trailer for it to show in classes and at pre-screening held on campus. Well the trailers are finally done and though I didn't have any part in filming, acting, or editing these check them out below. The first one has the theme that there is a water shortage and now you have to pay to pee at SDSU. The second shows what happens when you try to pee for free.

Trailer 1

Trailer 2

's Baggers Restaurant: Nuremberg

So I woke up this morning and did my usual check of the BBC and found an interesting article/video about a new German restaurant that opened in Nuremberg. Apparently there are no waiters and everything is ordered by touch screen and delivered to you via rollercoast like tracks from the kitchen on the second floor. While you wait the touch screens also have access to the internet so you can check your email and such. With how fun this restaurant looks I'll definitely have to make an effort to get up to Nuremberg while I'm over there.

's Baggers

Link to the BBC Story

Spring Break Rap-up

So today is the last day of my break before I start the next month of group projects before I graduate in May. The break as a whole was somewhat relaxing since I actually had time to get things done that I have been putting off for sometime. Mainly laundry, which has taken me almost the whole week to do (I apparently have a lot of clothes since I never throw anything out). My roommates and I also went to the Padre-Dodger game on Friday night though it would have been a better experience if the Padres would have won instead of imploding in the seventh with Thatcher took the mound. The game did have one plus. It helped reaffirm my hatred for the Dodgers and their fans. Come on serious! Do you need to dance every time your time turns a routine play?!

My new camera finally arrived on Friday though I haven't had too much time to play around with it yet. My first impression is that the LCD screen seems to be a little blurry for a 7.2 megapixel camera, Hopefully that doesn't transfer over when uploaded onto a computer.

Some quick hit highlights of the week: Trail riding with Charlton, Alex's Saturday BBQ, Laundry, Driving around San Diego because laser tag was closed, Padres losing to the Dodgers, Getting maps of the Balkans, Missing a group meeting for MGT 405, Fixing my computer, My new camera arriving....My spring break in a nut shell.

Random trip update

So yesterday I bought a map of the Balkans region because I figured it would be easier to see the big picture compared to having to constantly scroll on Google Maps. I also picked up a Lonely Planet guide a few weeks again with Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia, and Slovenia in it so I'll probably be reading that to get some ideas on where to go on my cool new map!

In other news I got a new point and shot camera since I broke the screen on my last one (It fell out of my pocket as I was going long for a football pass). It should arrive tomorrow so I'll be sure to write about it here.

Spending my morning at the Apple Store

You would think by the title of this that I'd be enjoying myself though thats not quite the case. My MacBook has had a network issue with Safari and any apps that use Safari to join the internet since last September. This doesn't sound like too big of deal but that means Dashboard, Software Updates, iWeb, iTunes Music Store, iChat and any other 'Apple' program can't connect to the internet if I'm on a wireless network. Though Firefox works fine...go figure.

I finally hit my breaking point and since I'm on spring break I thought I get it taken care of. It's probably some random setting that I accidently checked and I'll look stupid when the Apple Rep flips it, right? WRONG! I've been here for over an hour now and they still haven't fixed it, though they are getting close. It only requires erasing all of my preferences and accounts back to factory settings. So anyway I'm not too happy of camper but hopefully it will finally be fixed and I'll be able to update my website when I go abroad again! I'm crossing my fingers.

Site fixed

The site is fixed so now you can look at all the old albums.

Night

Slight hiccups

So it has been brought to my attention that the old photo pages aren't exactly working except the new Copenhagen page. The main page has been updated to reflect the new trip and pictures from last summer have been moved to the bottom along with the links to my email, my buddy Adam's site (who is also going to Oxford), and Charlton's The Leadenhall Journal (which I would recommend checking out his last Asia trip posts). On the note of last summer's pictures I FINALLY uploaded pictures from Copenhagen, Amsterdam and my last few hours in Oxford. With those added it finally puts to close the first run of KinstonBound. Though right now the site still has the same feel I'm hoping to maybe add some new features before I take off, I'll let you know soon what I'm thinking.

In other news to day is my first day of Spring Break from SDSU. The bittersweetness of it is that it will be my last spring break unless I go to grad school or something. So you'd think I'd go on some crazy trip, right?! Unforunately I'll probably just stay home and do homework. Though I'm not complaining too much 'cause I still get a week off.

Bound again for Kingston!

Ticket has been booked and the money has been paid. I'm bound again in Oxford, England.

As a part of my grad trip to Europe this summer I'm going back to Oxford for three weeks. Though unfortunately I'll probably not be at 4 Kingston Road I'll still in in Jericho and in walking distance of the pubs I have come to love.

The other part of the trip is a four week romp through the balkan region of Europe. I'll be starting in Montenegro and working my way to England through Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia and any other country that feels like getting in the way. I'll be updating dating the main site to reflect this upcoming trip but please have patience since classes and work still take presidence.

It's only March and I'm already super excited.

How long has it been?

So I'm writing this during presentations in my internet marketing class. I did my presentation last Wednesday before thanksgiving and now I have two weeks of class with nothing to do but sit, watch and finally update my blog.

So its been a little over three months since I've gotten back from Oxford and its interesting at how much can change and yet how much can remain the same. When I got back I immediately got back into American Marketing Association though this time around I was VP of Finance and Fundraising. With AMA we've done a lot of stuff from Make-a-Wish to a full on job fair for our members. Though as the semester comes to an end I'm not running for a position next semester and it seems a lot of board members are disappointed in me for not coming back. The way I look at it is that I've been on the board for a year now and its time that I move on, but I'll still be around to help out.

I'm back playing pool with APA again. I still seem to suck. My problem is that I shot well but I has a problem finishing (I'm still talking about pool right?). Though my team on Wednesday is about middle of the road in the standing, though I still think we have a shot. My monday team on the other hand is in first place so I'm pretty excited about that.

SDSU as a whole has been really busy with taking 18 units and all. Three more weeks and then I'm off for four weeks. Doc is gearing up for Oxford during that time and I need to talk to him about sending a carton of cigarettes back for Adam since I've been too busy to take care of it myself. I apologize Adam.

I'm still longing to travel though I'm going to have to wait until graduation and I'm leaning towards a round the world trip with possibly Joe D and Nick coming along, its still in the extreme planning stages though.

Well I won't get too long winded though I'll try to start updating more frequently. Have a good day.

Airport in Amsterdam

So I'm chillin' in the food court of the airport in Amsterdam. My flight doesn't leave for Heathrow for another three hours and I didn't feel like shopping so I've busted out the laptop. So with Copenhagen and Amsterdam I saw both the Carlsburg brewery and the Heineken brewery! Hurray beer! Copenhagen itself I wasn't overly impressed with after being in Stockholm but that could have been partly that google maps gave me the wrong directions to my hotel and I spent a half a hour walking in the opposite direction. Oh yeah it was raining too! But the weather cleared up and it turned into a pretty enjoyable afternoon walking around the city. Saw a windmill and the famous mermaid so I'd saw it was a successful stop in Denmark. The train from Copenhagen to Amsterdam was quite good, probably because this time I had a bed for a night train and slept a good eight hours. It also came with a german style breakfast, which I didn't know how much I missed since my stay there six weeks ago. The Heineken Brewery was probably the highlight of Amsterdam. We tried to go to the Anne Frank House but the line was over teo hours long so we ended up walking around the canals and finding a cheap Italian restaurant that you could get pizzas for five Euros. So after I get into London I'll be heading out to Oxford to finish packing up and hitting a few more pubs for the last time. I'll make it a point to go out and finally see that nunnery that I've been wanting to see the whole trip but haven't told any of you about. Lastly I'll may or may not have time to update pictures before I head back to the old U S of A, just a heads up.

Slightly delayed post (8/15/07)

So I’m on the train to Copenhagen from Stockholm. Right now we are picking up more people at Linköping Central Station. The train says it has internet, and I can get the internet to come up on Firefox though the instructions on how to access it are all in Swedish! So needless to say I’ll have to be posting this when I get to Copenhagen. The Swedish countryside is just so beautiful! Little red and yellow houses along side lakes and meadows. Stockholm in general was better than Helsinki the the one day I sent in both cities. Helsinki has the feel of a small town where Stockholm is just huge! The old town in Stockholm was definitely the best. Well I’m going to watch Casino Royale for what seems to be the hundredth time this trips so far. Cheers.

On the Oxford Tube

Long time no blog and do apologize for that.

So I'm sitting on the OxfordTube heading to London for the day. This will be my third time to London this trip, but I still haven't hit up everything that I want to see.

So my month in Oxford has been going really well. Yesterday we went to Portsmouth and toured the HMS Victory and enjoyed a wonderful day in sun. Last weekend we made it up to Scotland and toured Edinbourgh castle and then took a train to Inverness and had a boat tour down Loch Ness. Meaghan sorry but my phone died after the epic trip over here and I didn't find a charger until I got back from Scotland so I couldn't look up your family name and I apologize for that.

I'm going to quickly skim over the rest of my adventures here quickly since I feel my picture page has kept you guys somewhat up to date. I finally got my bag about two weeks ago a so I finally have a coat and tie, also I've been greatly enjoying the pubs. Anyways talk to all of you soon and enjoy your Saturday.

Deutschland Deutschland Uber Alis!

So I'll try to keep this one short otherwise I'm going to miss morning beer. Since I got here on Friday I've been constantly doing something. The Wenzels have been very kind opening up their home to me and taking me around Langen. Yesterday we went to Darmstadtfest, which was like a street/Del Mar Fair atmosphere. I've been having A LOT of beer and wurst and all of its been good. Also today we are going to another fest though this one is different and is more like going to Williamsburg, VA. It will be like going through the history of the town that the fest will be in. Anyway I'll let you all enjoy your Sunday and I'll try to keep in touch.

P.S. The bags were packed and the goodbyes were said. Little did I know that I was about to go on a 48-hour journey into the 7th layer of hell!

Everything began like normal; we even left San Diego on time. Though trouble was brewing. Somewhere over Ohio the captain lets everyone know that there is some weather issues in New York and that we were in a holding pattern. Things still were okay since I had a 2-hour layover, but that changed when the captain said we were running out of fuel and we had a problem with the navigation equipment. We landed in Chicago around the same time I should have been landing in New York. So after spending four hours in Chicago and not being able to get off the plane except for five minute to grab a sandwich we were off again trying to get to New York via Canada air space. It was not to be and we landed in Boston at around 11:30 with no hotel and no flight to New York or London. I was lucky enough to get a flight out of JFK for 8 pm the next day and flight 160 would continue onto New York as well though in the morning. In Boston I met and got to know many of my fellow passengers and actually exchanged email addresses to keep in touch after we all went our separate ways in New York. I made the flight to New York and made on the flight to London though it was over an hour and a half late making me miss my flight to Frankfurt. After I got that moved to a later flight I finally arrived in Frankfurt about two days after I left San Diego. To cap off this whole horrible experience they lost my suitcase that I was suppose to leave in Oxford.

Things are better in Germany though and I will write about them soon, but right now I’m late for a beerfest.

Beep Boop Beep Boop

So I'm down to a little under day left and its starting to feel like an episode of 24 for me. I still have a lot on my plate to finish up before 7 tomorrow morning though. I have to finish up at work, make it to the officer meeting for AMA, start and finish packing, and all the little things in between. Deep breath and go!

- - -

In other news I organized paintball for my family and my friends this pass Sunday. It was great getting out there and having the chance to shoot my parents. Though for whatever reason it seemed like I was always on the losing team. Who knew they were pro paintballers?
